Everyone knows Ecclesiastes 3. Almost no one reads past verse two.

A time to be born, a time to die. We put that on nursery walls and funeral programs. It is beautiful, and it is safe. But Solomon kept writing, and the verses that follow are the ones that actually ask something of you.

A time to keep, and a time to cast away. A time to get, and a time to lose. Solomon was not writing poetry about seasons in general. He was writing about the seasons of your actual life, including the one you are in with your money right now.

Prepare before the harvest, not during it

A farmer does not decide to plant seed the week before harvest. The preparing happens months earlier, in a season that looks like nothing is happening. Turning soil. Clearing stones. Waiting.

Most people treat their finances the opposite way. They wait for the emergency, and then they scramble to prepare in the middle of the crisis. But Solomon says there is a time to prepare, and it is not the same time as the time you need what you prepared.

If today feels calm, that calm is not empty time. It is preparing time. It is the season to build the margin, start the emergency fund, and get your plan on paper before the storm asks for it.

A time to cast away

Here is the verse most budgeting content skips completely. A time to keep, and a time to cast away. Solomon is telling you plainly that some things you are holding onto were only ever meant for a season, and the season is over.

Debt is one of those things. It may have arrived through a real need, a real emergency, a real gap between what you had and what life demanded. That was its season. But debt was never meant to be a life sentence. There is a time to cast it away.
