Ready Before the Business: What God Builds in You While You Wait

Picture a person who receives the keys to a busy restaurant on a Monday morning. The doors open at noon. There is no inventory list, no record of what is owed to suppliers, and no plan for next Friday’s payroll. The opportunity is real. The preparation is not. Most of us would agree that the keys came too early.

Many people are waiting on something right now. A business. A promotion. A calling. An opening that has not come yet. If that is you, the question underneath the waiting is often the same one: Why has God not given me this yet? This article takes that question seriously, without a formula and without shame.

You do not need to own a business, or even want one, to find this useful. The principles here apply to a single person with a first paycheck, a couple planning together, a family stretching a budget, and an entrepreneur counting the cost of a leap. The word “business” stands in for any assignment you are hoping to receive.

We are here to build your dreams. We are here to help you build a business, join the local Shelter Volunteer Program, or serve in the Youth Ministry at your local church.

The Question Behind the Question

Let us begin with an honest boundary. Scripture does not give us a formula that says: be faithful for this many months, and God must hand you a business. Faithfulness is not a payment, and God does not owe anyone an outcome in exchange for good behavior. Anyone who teaches otherwise is selling something the Bible does not promise.

It is equally important to say what waiting does not mean. A delay does not prove weak faith. A hard financial season does not prove God is displeased. Faithful people in Scripture waited years, and some of them waited in difficulty that had nothing to do with their obedience.

What Scripture does show, again and again, is a pattern: God cares about what we do with what we already hold, because it shapes who we become and what we can carry. Waiting is not always punishment. Sometimes it is preparation, and preparation is something we can cooperate with today.

Four Circles of Preparation

Think of preparation as four circles, each one drawn around something you already have. You do not need a business to start drawing them. You only need to begin where you stand.

1

Be Faithful With What Is Small

Jesus teaches a principle that reaches far beyond money, yet it begins with money. Trust is built in small things before it is extended in large ones.

“He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?”

Luke 16:10 and 11, NKJV

Notice the word trust. The passage is not about earning a reward. It is about what can be safely placed in your hands. Small faithfulness is how character becomes visible, first to ourselves and then to others.

⬢  Pay one bill on time this week, every week, without being reminded.

⬢  Give a small, planned amount before you spend the rest.

⬢  Keep one promise you made to yourself about money, even a tiny one.

⬢  Small Is Where It Starts

Start Smaller Than the Total

A large total can freeze a person before the first payment is ever made. If you are looking at the full amount you owe and wondering where to begin, this week’s Short on the debt snowball speaks to that exact moment: start smaller than the total.

A debt snowball directs extra money toward the smallest balance first, while the minimum payment continues on every other debt. The point is not speed. The point is a clear next step you can finish, because faithfulness grows through steps that are small enough to complete.

2

Prepare the Field First

Proverbs describes the order of wise work in a single sentence. The preparation happens outside, in the field, before the house goes up.

“Prepare your outside work, get it ready for yourself in the field; and afterward build your house.”

Proverbs 24:27, NKJV

A field is slow, plain work. Nobody photographs it. Yet every harvest depends on it. For a future business, the field might be learning a skill, keeping a clean record of income and expenses, building a simple emergency cushion, or becoming known as someone who finishes what they start. For a household, it might be putting an honest plan on paper before the next season arrives.

⬢  Name one skill or habit you can build in the next thirty days.

⬢  Start tracking income and spending in one place, even if the numbers are small.

3

Count the Cost

Jesus used a builder to teach a lesson about honest planning. He did not criticize the desire to build. He praised the wisdom of knowing what it takes to finish.

“For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it?”

Luke 14:28, NKJV

Counting the cost is not fear. It is respect for the people who will depend on the work: your family, your employees, your customers, and the God who entrusted it. Sit down with a pencil. What would this opportunity require in the first year? What would it require from your time, your marriage or friendships, and your health? What would you do if the first months brought less than you expected?

⬢  Write the true monthly cost of your life today, line by line.

⬢  Write what the next opportunity would add to that number.

4

Know the State of Your Flocks

A shepherd who does not know how many sheep are in the pasture cannot protect them. Knowing the numbers is not greed. It is care.

“Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, and attend to your herds.”

Proverbs 27:23, NKJV

Your flock is whatever God has already placed in your care: income, debts, savings, time, relationships, and skills. Many people avoid looking at the numbers because looking feels heavy. Clarity is not condemnation. It is simply the moment you stop guessing and start stewarding.

⬢  List what you earn, what you owe, and what you own. Do not judge it. Only write it down.

⬢  Choose one number to improve this month, and one person who can hold you accountable.

What Waiting Can Build in You

When the four circles are in place, something quiet happens. You become a person who can carry more, not because you are stronger than before, but because you are better prepared. Your finances are visible. Your habits are steady. Your motives have been examined. If the opportunity arrives, you are ready to receive it. If it does not arrive in the form you expected, you are still a wiser steward of what God has placed in your hands today.

That is a different way to wait. Not with a clenched fist demanding a result, and not with folded arms doing nothing. It is the posture of someone who says: Lord, I will tend what You have given me, and I will trust You with the timing.

Remember that Jesus also describes the joy at the end of faithful work.

“Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.”

Matthew 25:21, NKJV

Notice where the joy comes from. It comes from the relationship with the master, not only from the assignment. Even when the larger assignment is still ahead, the faithful servant already walks with the Lord of the work.

Questions to Meditate On

Read slowly. Pause after each one. Pray before you write.

1

What am I waiting for right now, and what do I truly want from God in this waiting: the opportunity, or Him?

2

Where have I been faithful in something small this month, and where have I quietly avoided it?

3

What is the “field” I need to prepare before I build my house? What is one step I can take this week?

4

If I counted the full cost of my next big step, what would I discover that I have not said out loud?

5

Do I know the true state of my flock: my income, my debts, my savings, and my time? What makes me hesitate to look?

6

Who in my life can speak honestly to me about my readiness, and have I invited them to do so?

A Prayer for the Season of Preparation

Lord, You see what I am hoping for, and You know the timing better than I do. Quiet my impatience, and keep my heart from comparing my season with the seasons of others.

Teach me to be faithful with what is small. Show me the field I need to prepare, give me courage to count the cost honestly, and help me know what You have placed in my care.

Where I have been afraid to look, give me peace to see clearly. Where I have been careless, give me grace to begin again. Send wise counselors into my life, and make me humble enough to listen.

Holy Spirit, teach me and help me to learn to wait. Whatever You give, and whenever You give it, let me receive it as Yours, to steward for Your glory and for the good of the people You love.

In the name of Jesus, amen.
