Develop the Skill Before You Need It
Sep 09, 2026Nobody becomes skilled in the middle of the emergency. They become skilled in the quiet season before it, when nobody is watching and nothing feels urgent.
Last week we talked about Ecclesiastes 3, and the seasons for preparing and for casting away. There is a third season worth naming, one that sits quietly underneath the other two. A time to develop the skill you will need before you know you need it.
A completely different path
Diana was nineteen years old and studying medicine when a car accident redirected her entire path. She did not choose accounting because it was her childhood dream. She chose it because God closed one door hard enough that she finally looked at the one He was actually opening.
She could not have known then that the skill she was about to spend years developing, the discipline of tracking numbers, categorizing every dollar, finding the story hidden inside a balance sheet, would one day become the backbone of a tool meant to help thousands of families see their own money clearly.
She developed the skill decades before she knew what it was for.

Most of us imagine skill-building as something we choose on purpose. Pick a goal, take the class, get the certificate. But some of the most important skills in your life were forced on you by a season you did not ask for.
Chad spent several years developing the skill of debt payoff, one Snowball payment at a time. He did not sign up for a course on it. He built the skill by living inside the discipline, week after week, long before he had any idea that skill would one day help build a company.
The skill God is developing in you right now, in whatever season feels hardest, is rarely wasted. It is rarely random. It is rarely just for you.
What skill are you developing right now
Ask yourself honestly. Is it the skill of saying no to a purchase you cannot afford yet. Is it the skill of tracking every dollar instead of guessing. Is it the skill of waiting on God instead of forcing an outcome.
None of those feel significant while you are living them. They rarely do. But skill built quietly today is the same skill that will carry weight you cannot yet see.
