When the Paycheck Stops: Four First Steps for a Hard Season

Choose your starting point
Chad and Diana Deeter together

It often begins with a quiet moment. A message from a manager. A meeting that ends sooner than expected. Or a different kind of quiet: the day you finally open the envelope you have been avoiding. Whatever the cause, many people ask the same question next: What do I do first?

Last week we shared four short videos for people in that moment: those looking for work, those starting over after bankruptcy, those sensing a new season from God, and those who simply want to begin paying down debt. This article puts all four in one place.

Tap a window below. Watch the Short, then try the one small step that goes with it. You do not need a plan for the whole year. You need the next honest step.

From Chad and Diana

We created these Shorts, and this page, for the person who is carrying more than anyone can see.

Take your time. Open one window today and another tomorrow. Small steps count.

A Word Before You Begin

Losing a job, filing for bankruptcy, or carrying debt does not mean your faith is weak, and it does not mean God is displeased with you. Scripture is full of faithful people who walked through loss.

These four windows are not formulas, and they do not promise a result. They are practical steps that help you see clearly, steward what you have today, and ask for help.

For the job seeker

While You Look for Work

Your money still needs a plan while you wait.

Your First Step

Write down your essential monthly expenses: housing, food, utilities, transportation, insurance, and minimum debt payments. Divide the total by four. That is your weekly starting number. Knowing it replaces guessing with a plan.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

Proverbs 3:5 and 6, NKJV

Then Try This

  • Contact the companies you pay before a payment is missed, and ask what options exist.
  • Tell one trusted person where you stand this week.

For a fresh start

Budgeting After Bankruptcy

A fresh start is still a start.

Your First Step

Before the month begins, write your income and your essential expenses on one page. At the end of each week, compare the plan with what actually happened. The goal is not perfection. The goal is a clear picture.

“Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

Lamentations 3:22 and 23, NKJV

Then Try This

  • Keep the plan simple enough to finish. One page is enough.
  • Remember that bankruptcy is a legal process. It is not a verdict on your worth or your faith.

For a new season

Count the Cost of What Is Next

Why did Elisha burn his plow?

Your First Step

Count the cost with a pencil. Write two lists: what this new season may ask you to leave behind, and what it may ask you to carry. If the new season is a business, bring both lists to your Clarity Call.

“Then he arose and followed Elijah, and became his servant.”

1 Kings 19:21, NKJV

Then Try This

  • Ask one trusted person to read both lists with you.
  • Pray over the lists before you decide anything.

Build two lists. Add what you will leave behind and what you will carry into the new season.

For the debt payoff journey

Start During Your Lunch Break

How to start paying off debt during lunch.

Your First Step

Use part of one lunch break this week. List every debt with its balance, minimum payment, and due date. A list moves you from dread to a plan.

“For who has despised the day of small things?”

Zechariah 4:10, NKJV

Then Try This

  • Choose a payoff method: snowball, smallest balance first, or avalanche, highest interest first.
  • Name the first debt you will target, then pay the minimum on the rest.

What the Four Steps Share

Each step begins the same way: look at what is true, write it down, and take one small action. Clarity is not condemnation. It is the moment you stop guessing and start stewarding.

Notice what these steps do not require. They do not require a large income, a perfect record, or a finished plan. They require honesty and a pencil.

Questions to Meditate On

Read slowly. Pause after each one. Pray before you write.

  1. What is the one number I have been avoiding, and what would it feel like to write it down?
  2. What do I need this season to teach me, and what do I need to release?
  3. Who can I invite to walk through this season with me?
  4. What is one small step I can finish before this weekend?
  5. How can I trust God with what I cannot control while I steward what I can?
Question 1 of 5

A Prayer for a Hard Season

Lord, You see my situation, and You know what I cannot see. Quiet my fear, and keep me from believing that my struggle measures my worth or Your love.

Give me courage to look at the numbers, honesty to write them down, and wisdom to take the next small step. Where I have felt ashamed, give me peace. Where I need help, send wise people to walk with me.

Teach me to steward what is in my hands today, and to trust You with what is not. Whatever You give, and whenever You give it, let me receive it as Yours.

In the name of Jesus, amen.

Know someone in this season? Send them this article. A small step shared is a step easier to take.
