We Are Flying to Honduras. This Is Why.
We are flying to Honduras to teach pastors about the spirit of poverty. Before we go, we need to name what we are fighting. Because it does not stay in Central America. It is already in your home.
This week: the spirit of poverty named, 7 signs it is on your family, leading your home before you lead in the church, and what it looks like when we fly.
|
|
| |
|
There is a difference between being broke and being poor.
Broke is a moment. Poor is a mindset. And behind the mindset, there is a spirit.
We have sat with families making $300,000 a year who still felt trapped. And families making $30,000 who lived in abundance. The variable was never the number in the account. It was the voice they were listening to.
We are flying to Honduras to teach pastors in San Pedro Sula and Comayagua how to identify and break this spirit in their homes, their churches, and their communities. Before we go, we want to name what we are going to fight. Because the spirit of poverty does not stay in Central America. It is already in your home.

Part 1
Poverty Is a Spirit Before It Is in Your Money
|
|
The spirit of poverty whispers the same lies in every language and every income bracket.
You will never have enough. God is holding out on you. The next raise, the next season, the next perfect plan will fix it.
It lies. God is not holding out on you. He is calling you out of a cycle that was never yours to carry.

"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the Lord Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven..."
Malachi 3:10-11 |
Malachi 3:10-11 is the oldest financial strategy in Scripture. Bring the whole tithe first. Not the leftovers. Not the remainder after the bills are paid. The first ten percent. Test Me in this, God says. And I will rebuke the devourer.
The devourer is not just a spiritual metaphor. The devourer is the car repair that arrives the week you finally had margin. The medical bill that appeared the month you were ahead. The unexpected expense that specializes in arriving exactly when you had nothing left.
God says: bring the tithe first and I will rebuke him. I will protect what remains. I will make the ninety percent go further than the hundred ever did. That is not a budget trick. It is a declaration of ownership.

"Broke is a moment. Poor is a mindset. Behind the mindset, there is often a spirit."
|
|
Question 1
Where in your financial life do you hear the whisper that you will never have enough? Name it. That is where the spirit is speaking. And that is where the tithe breaks it.

Part 2
7 Signs the Spirit of Poverty Is on Your Family
|
|
You do not need a low bank account to carry the spirit of poverty. You just need one of these seven signs. We have coached families making $300,000 a year who lived in fear. And families making $30,000 who walked in Kingdom abundance. The difference was never the balance. It was the belief.
| |
1. You feel guilty when money comes in Proverbs 10:22
The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it. Guilt over abundance is a sign, not a virtue.
|
| |
2. You believe wealth is worldly 1 Timothy 6:17-19
God richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment AND commands us to be generous. Wealth is a tool, not a temptation.
|
| |
3. You tithe last, or not at all Malachi 3:10
The whole tithe comes first. Last-place tithing is not tithing. It is tipping.
|
| |
4. You expect scarcity even in abundance Deuteronomy 8:18
It is God who gives you the ability to produce wealth. Scarcity in abundance is a posture problem, not an income problem.
|
| |
5. You avoid conversations about money Proverbs 27:23
Be sure you know the condition of your flocks. Avoidance is not peace. It is denial.
|
| |
6. You believe generational cycles cannot break Proverbs 13:22
A good person leaves an inheritance for their children's children. The cycle was never meant to be permanent.
|
| |
7. You give from lack, not from overflow 2 Corinthians 9:6-8
Whoever sows generously will reap generously. Giving from lack is fear-based. Giving from overflow is faith-based.
|
|
Question 2
Which of these seven describes your household right now? Write the number down. That is your starting point. Not a condemnation. A diagnosis. And every diagnosis has a treatment.
|

Part 3
Lead Your Home Before You Lead the Church
|
|
This is the message we are carrying to over 100 pastors in Honduras.
You cannot preach a Sunday sermon about generosity if you fought about money on Saturday. Your congregation feels what happens at your kitchen table even if you never say a word about it from the pulpit.
We have coached pastors whose marriages were bleeding out over money. The gap between the pulpit and the kitchen table was the gap that swallowed their authority. We have also coached men in small country churches whose homes were so aligned that the congregation could feel it before he even spoke.
|
"You cannot preach a Sunday sermon about generosity if you fought about money on Saturday. Congregations feel that."
|
The order matters. Home first. Church second. There is no shortcut to spiritual authority, and there is no workaround for the leader who skips the household and goes straight to the congregation.
If you are a man in ministry, sit with one question tonight: does my wife trust me to administer our household finances? That is the starting line. Not the church budget. Not the capital campaign. The kitchen table.
And if you are a woman reading this: you are the one who holds the money and the children every single day. You see the shape of the household finances before any pastor does. Your voice in this is not secondary. It is essential.
|
Question 3
Is the financial leadership in your home aligned with the spiritual leadership you want to carry outside of it? Where is the gap? Name it honestly. That gap is exactly what we are flying to Honduras to close.

A Prayer for You and for Honduras
Father, we name the spirit of poverty right now. The whisper that says we will never have enough. The belief that wealth is worldly. The guilt that comes when abundance arrives. We renounce it. We bring You the tithe first. We declare that the devourer is rebuked over our household. And we ask You to do in our homes what we are believing You to do in Honduras: break the cycle. In Jesus name. Amen.
P.S: Be our partner in prayer as we fly. We will be praying for you from the field.
